theresa may’s vote of no confidence
On the 12th of December 2018, a vote of no confidence was announced against Theresa May, our bumbling Tory prime minister who has spent the last two years trying to make sense of the Brexit mess left for her by a pig-fucking power-hungry man who goes by the name of David Cameron. Standing as our country’s second female Prime Minister in the history of time, May has been criticised for her hair style, the clothes she wears and even her dance moves, but it wasn’t until this week that she has actually been covered for her real political work as Prime Minister, that the letters of no confidence have reached the dreaded total of 48 (a 15% representation of Conservative MPs.)
Despite her more than questionable voting record, and abysmal public speaking record thus far, I can’t help but feel a punch in the stomach when I see a woman fighting to maintain her power amongst a circus of media bullshit, whilst Donald Trump sits safely in the white house surrounded by his abundance of sexual assault allegations, holding hands with Brett Cavanaugh, laughing his toupee off.
I’m writing as a Labour supporter and a Green party member, but first and foremost as a feminist, who is seeing a woman being bullied by men. A woman simply trying to make sense of a mess, a mess that’s clearance would be impossible for most political forces, let alone a weak team that can’t support whoever takes on the mammoth challenge of putting themselves in charge. My opinions on Brexit, the EU and the Conservative party aside, I stand as a woman shouting to a woman who is being put down, and potentially removed from power, in the moment when she is actually getting the most done. David Cameron fucked a pig. Tony Blair started war in Iraq killing thousands of people. Gordon Brown referred to a passionate voter as a “bigoted woman” for questioning him about his policies on crime and immigration. And Theresa “The Appeaser” gets a vote of no confidence and articles placing her in the “legs-it” competition when trying to pull it all together again.
I’m writing with a desperate gasp of exasperation at the obvious misogyny entrenched in our country’s political system. And in this moment, consider the words of Mary Beard, “You cannot easily fit women into a structure that is already coded as male; you have to change the structure”.
