level with me - a new journal representing the under-represented

Level With Me is an independent, student-run journal designed to give a platform to under-represented students from widening participation, state-educated and working-class backgrounds. The journal documents the experiences, opinions, and concerns surrounding what it means to be a student within these demographics at the University of Edinburgh. We hope to shed light on the specific challenges faced by these students in an environment where our interests are grossly underrepresented. Level With Me offers an outlet for voices that are not usually heard, and which have the potential to reveal truths that many in the university community would not otherwise have considered. The content is made solely by the students it represents. We’re looking for opinion pieces, testimonies, creative writing and willing interviewees for the journal. Contributors can choose to remain anonymous if desired.

Why are we making a journal? We feel that in order to tackle inequality and elitism at the University of Edinburgh, it is important to have a record of the experiences of widening participation, state-educated and working-class students – in their own words. We believe that university is a place to learn about different cultures and backgrounds, and to expand yourself. However, the most privileged students do not always engage fully with the unique obstacles that many of us face, resulting in a community from which we can feel excluded and isolated. We think it is time to bring voices like ours to the forefront of campus discussions.
