editorial relaunch 2021

mxogyny took a brief pause this summer for our team to rest. during this time, we thought a lot about the work we do and how we can better enact our ethos and mission.

in 2019, the diversity analysis of National Portfolio Organisations (made up of selected leading organisations across England’s creative industry) revealed that only 11% of the NPO workforce have a BME background, with both LGBTQIA+ and disabled groups making up just 6% each of the creative workforce. further, there is, as of yet, no way to compare overlapping characteristics in this data, thus preventing knowledge of the true extent that compounding intersectional barriers affect creatives who identify with multiple minority groups. we recognise that there is a systemic issue with access and equality of opportunity in the arts, where many creatives face intersecting barriers due to their gender identity, race, sexuality, disability and/or class.

Mx has become a symbol of defiance in working environments, acting as a replacement for the titles of Ms, Mrs, Miss or Mr on application forms and allowing people to opt out of certain identity-based biases. our work hopes to actively reduce the salience of such biases through the diversity of our content and the empowerment of our contributors.’]

at mxogyny, we seek to provide an opportunity for creatives from marginalised backgrounds to share their creativity as part of a community connected by a spirit of mutual support and growth. in dismantling and repurposing the word misogyny, our name hopes to bring attention to the discrimination individuals face in the creative world on the grounds of gender, sexuality, race, class, religion, age or ability. we work to provide a platform for artists to share their work and experiences in various forms: discussion pieces, poetry, prose, self, arts and collaborations. if you would like to share your work with mxogyny, get in touch at mxeditors@gmail.com
